Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that is designed to eliminate unsightly veins without the need for traditional surgical procedures. Through the injection of specialized solutions like Ascelra directly into the affected vein, sclerotherapy stimulates a breakdown in the vein, resulting in an overall disappearance. Sclerotherapy is particularly effective for treating unsightly varicose veins and spider veins that appear on the legs and around the ankles.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Improved Appearance: Sclerotherapy effectively diminishes the appearance of unpleasant spider veins and enlarged varicose veins, leaving you with smoother and clearer skin.

Enhanced Comfort: In addition to treating the appearance of your skin, sclerotherapy helps to alleviate the painful symptoms associated with varicose veins, including aching, swelling, cramping, and burning sensations, leaving you with aesthetically pleasing and physically comforting effects.

Treatment Areas for Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy primarily targets the veins in the legs and ankles, where spider veins and enlarged varicose veins most commonly occur. It may also treat insight veins on the chest, arms, and hands. Our skilled providers will assess your specific areas of concern to determine the most appropriate treatment for your aesthetic goals.

Sclerotherapy Treatment Procedure

Preparation and Positioning: To begin, you will be asked to lie on your back or stomach, which will be determined after the location of the veins being treated is assessed. Our providers will ensure you are in a comfortable position that allows for optimal comfort throughout your procedure.

Cleansing and Sterilization: Before your sclerotherapy treatment begins, our providers with cleanse the affected area thoroughly to ensure a completely sterile environment to prevent the risk of infection.

Injection Process: Utilizing a very fine needle, our providers will inject the treatment solution directly into the effected vein. This solution will work to irritate the vein’s lining, causing it to swell and block the flow of blood through the vein. Once the vein has completely closed itself off, the vein will begin to fade as blood is redirected to healthier veins.

While some patients report feeling a mild stinging sensation or slight cramping during the procedure, these discomforts are well-tolerated and generally very mild. If, at any point, you begin to feel significant discomfort, communicating with our providers is essential in order to make necessary adjustments for your comfort.

Application of Pressure and Post-Treatment Massage: After the treatment solution has been injected into the affected veins, your provider will gently massage the treatment into the treated area to promote the dispersion of the solution. In some circumstances, a bandage or pad will be applied to the treatment area. In most cases, sclerotherapy typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete, making it a convenient option for individuals seeking a quick and effective vein treatment.

Post Treatment Care for Sclerotherapy

Following your sclerotherapy procedure, it is essential to prioritize skin health to ensure proper healing. It is recommended that all patients stay out of direct sunlight for at least two weeks post-treatment and shield their skin with sunscreen of SPF 30+. Additionally, consider using compression therapy like support hosiery and compression socks or wraps to aid in healing while simultaneously reducing swelling during the initial days after treatment.

Consideration of physical activity will also need to be monitored initially after treatment. It is wise to refrain from strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for the first two weeks after treatment to minimize complications and maximize healing. It should be noted that patients should avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and other anti-inflammatory medications for the first 48 after treatment unless stated by their provider. This will contribute to optimal results and a smooth recuperation process.
